There’s something especially meaningful about photographing a wedding for someone you’ve known since childhood. Christina and I went to elementary school together, and I still have memories of playing Bejeweled on her dad’s desktop, listening to Evanescence, and playing with her cats. Getting to reconnect all these years later — and photograph her wedding to Dan at Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine — was incredibly special.
Christina and Dan met in recovery and have supported each other throughout their journeys toward health and healing. Together, they’ve built a wonderfully eclectic little family with their dog, Samson, cat, Ouji, and hedgehog, Luna.
Their wedding day was intimate and incredibly family-centered. Christina’s mom and soon-to-be stepdaughter, Cadence, helped her get ready, while her cousin did her hair and makeup. Dan had a special morning with his daughter Cadence, too, as she helped him put his outfit together. She also coached him through making a TikTok, which was an adorable glimpse into their relationship.
With no first look, Dan saw Christina for the first time as she walked down the aisle. First looks are special and logistically useful, but as a romantic at heart I just love saving the reveal until the ceremony. As we all held our breath waiting for Christina to walk down the aisle, Dan was, too — but even more so :) Adding another personal touch to the day, Christina’s uncle officiated the ceremony on the lawn overlooking the ocean. The vows, the views…it was all so lovely.
Their October wedding was a gorgeous, clear Maine fall day, with clear autumn light and ocean vistas. Mocktail hour took place on the lawn, and then everyone moved to the tent for dinner and dancing. It got chilly quickly after sunset, but that didn’t stop anyone from celebrating. After sunset couple’s portraits, Dan traded his dress shoes for sneakers so he could really commit to the dance floor. Wise man.
The reception was dry, but you never would have guessed it from the energy on the dance floor. Goofy moves, dance competitions, slow songs. The music flowed and people moved. And then there was Christina’s uncle, who was showing off some cartwheels. My flabbers were absolutely gasted at that.
Christina and Dan, thank you for trusting me to document this chapter of your lives. I’m so happy for you two and I wish you a lifetime of joy and adventure. Big hugs and most of all, congratulations!
