Maternity Portraits // Roanoke, VA

I love taking maternity portraits for lots of reasons, but mainly because there is just something different about a couple when they are expecting a baby. There’s this special combination of joy and nervousness and while many people can relate, the intense anticipation is shared between the expecting parents alone. It’s something that is just between them. In this way, maternity portraits can feel so wonderfully intimate to photograph.

This sweet couple is expecting their first baby (a boy!) and I just loved capturing their excitement. We met near the Blue Ridge Parkway in the late afternoon, and the sunlight glowed warmer with each passing minute. The wind was intense, but these two were great sports about it as we wandered around the fields and the woods. It was a beautiful evening for a photoshoot.

In between shots I asked them about themselves, and as an outdoor lover my heart warmed to know that they want to decorate their son’s nursery with imagery depicting the Blue Ridge Mountains. They, too, love getting outside, whether that’s hiking, camping, or rock climbing. They regaled me with stories of a climbing adventure spoiled by New England’s black flies. It was sweet to see how enthusiastic they were about sharing with that son – even if he will only be an infant at first. It’s never to early to share your passion with your child!

After letting the dogs join for a few pictures at Mayflower Hills Park (and boy did they show off – what photogenic pups!), we caravanned over to the parkway to catch more sunset views. The mountains were aglow in the background as this mom-and-dad-to-be smiled and held each other in the late evening sun. I know this easy-going, adventurous couple will be so happy to begin their next adventure as parents. Congratulations, you two!
